Long Beach at Sandy Bay was once again the hub for families on Australia Day, with the Wrest Point Sandy Bay Regatta achieving a 30-year attendance high of 15,000 people.

Now in its 170th year, the regatta has strong community ties and plays a central role in the official Australia Day citizenship ceremony.

Undoubtedly, one of the reasons for the event’s longevity is its focus on family fun both on and off the water, giving children in the community the opportunity to try new water sports and activities.

Wrest Point General Manager Dominic Baker said that the regatta sponsorship is an important one for the business, and a partnership that has stood the test of time.

“We have this iconic community event, one of the longest running regattas in the world, right in our own backyard,” he said.

“To be able to come along and see our sponsorship at work, with families getting outdoors and enjoying wholesome fun and entertainment is very rewarding.

“There’s kayaking, dragon boat racing, surf lifesaving, scavenger hunting, tug-of-war, plenty of food and live music, even a pie eating competition. What more could you want on Australia Day?”

There were two new events at the regatta this year: the first ever beach water polo game and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s come-and-try sailing. More than 200 children tried sailing for the first time in their lives.
